Hello, I Am Shakira

Do loads of research – if there’s an apprenticeship in your desired subject or career role, do it!

Tell us more about your experience

I am new to my apprenticeship as I have only just started, but at the moment I help out my supervisor with their tasks as part of my day-to-day role. I’m excited to get started and get more involved in the company. Even though I am new, I’ve already been placed in two very important meetings so far – I can’t wait to participate in more stimulating projects.

I originally decided to do an apprenticeship as it’s an amazing way to combine work experience with your studies and the ability to learn from experienced professionals. If I could give any advice to someone considering an apprenticeship too, it would be to consider all of your options!

Do loads of research – if there’s an apprenticeship in your desired subject or career role, do it! You just need to keep in mind that there’s a lot of hard work involved, and you’ll need to dedicate a lot of effort to your role. I did use GetMyFirstJob when looking for an apprenticeship, the people were amazing and it was so easy to use and get the information I needed in a clear way.

“Look at all your options and don’t compare yourself to other candidates – you have your own talents!”

I did face some adversity before applying to my apprenticeship. There definitely wasn’t a lot of guidance or information provided by my college about the apprenticeship route at all. This resulted in me doing my own research about my options. I also had to convince some of my family members that this was the best decision for me, as it was the first time they’d ever heard of a Law apprenticeship. They were initially quite sceptical as it all sounded too good to be true, but I’m glad I pursued my own path.

My employer has given me support in getting started. They’ve allowed me to be part of important meetings and I’ve already participated in a lot of interesting tasks. I’m hoping I’ll be granted my own jobs to do soon! I’ve already picked up some great skills including time management and a hard work ethic, but I’m eager to develop even more professionally. At the end of my apprenticeship, I hope to become a full solicitor, working with my employer.
